Help a Child has been present in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) since 2008, where it carries out interventions in the Eastern part; North-Kivu, South Kivu and Ituri in the areas of child protection, combating gender-based violence (GBV), education, food security and livelihoods, water, hygiene and sanitation (WASH), and the empowerment of households and young people.
Our approach is community-based, inclusive and child-centred, with a particular focus on girls, children with disabilities and the most vulnerable people.
DRC is the second largest country in Africa with a population above 95,800,000, considered as if not the naturally richest country in the world, then among the richest yet counted among the poorest country because a large proportion of its population is living below the poverty line because of repetitive and incessant warfare, thus facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, particularly in the Eastern region. More than 2 million people are affected in the Goma region alone, with repercussions nationwide and in neighbouring countries.
Help a Child DRC makes an impact with the following donors: Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs – Dutch Relief Alliance, ECHO, USAID-BHA with Medair, UNICEF with local partners: ADED (Appui au Développement de l’Enfant en Détresse), Help Channel Congo, FECONDE (Femme Congolaise pour le Development), and CAU (Collectif Alfa Ujuvi).
