Location: Banadir State, South-Central Somalia

As part of the Joint Response phase 2 of the Dutch Relief Alliance, Help a Child and local partners work together to assist internally displaced people in Banadir State, South Central Somalia. Our intervention areas:

Water, sanitation and hygiene

  • Distribution of water and hygiene kits
  • Provision of water supply to a settlement for Internally Displaced People
  • Informing people on proper hygiene and sanitation through care group members

Nutrition

  • Comprehensive nutrition services at three health facilities
  • Screening of children under five
  • Provision of food ration for young children, pregnant and lactating women
  • Admission of moderate and severe malnourished children to feeding programs

Health

  • Promotion of the health of pregnant women, young mothers and baby’s
  • Training of Skilled Birth Attendants to lower risks during birth
  • Free malnutrition screening and vaccination
  • Treatment of children under five for common child diseases
  • Vaccination coverage program against measles
Effective health promotion through Care Groups

The health care component of the project in Somalia is strongly focused on community involvement. To reach scale and work low-cost, we facilitate the establishment of Care Groups. The Care Group model brings health services to the household level against minimal costs.
