Climate change makes children in poverty more vulnerable than ever

Worldwide children suffer from the effects of climate change. Those who live in poverty are the most vulnerable and therefore are affected the most. Weather patterns are becoming more extreme and unpredictable, resulting in heavy rainfall, wind, floods or severe heat and drought.

The consequences are severe:

  • Food insecurity: agriculture production is disrupted, resulting in families not being able to feed their children;
  • Water crisis: many families don’t have access to clean drinking water, and contaminated water sources contribute to the spread of diseases;
  • Migration and displacement: houses and infrastructure get destroyed and land degrades, making many areas uninhabitable and displacing families.

Building climate resilience
Climate change is pushing children even further into poverty, increasing inequality and making them more vulnerable than ever. At the same time there are insufficient resources and capacity for solutions. This is why climate resilience and sustainability play an essential role in our programmes and organization. Our goal is to assist families in becoming more climate resilient for the current and future impact of climate change.

A thriving, green and safe environment for every child
Together with local communities, partner organizations and government structures, we have identified the biggest climate challenges in our project areas and aligned our Child Centered Community Development programmes:

  • Through Self-Help groups, agricultural training (PIP) and livelihood support parents learn how to adapt. For example by implementing climate smart agriculture, using energy-saving stoves and regreening their environment.
  • At school children learn how to be more aware of their environment, for example by growing seeds, planting trees, cleaning up plastic and using water in a sustainable way.
  • We encourage communities to work together and make joint agreements, for example on where to save and fetch water, where to keep their livestock and how to sustainably manage their forests.

In addition, we actively lobby and advocate for solutions with local and national governments. Together we are working on a thriving, green and safe environment for every child to grow up in.

Our environmental ambitions
We are committed to taking our corporate social responsibility. That’s why we critically assess our own impact on the environment. Both in the Netherlands and in India and various countries in Africa. For the strategic period 2025 – 2028 we have formulated three key environmental ambitions. These are aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals to ensure a holistic and impactful approach:

  1. We identify, prevent, mitigate and address potential and actual negative impacts of our programmes on the environment.
  2. We measure our carbon footprint, starting with a baseline survey and report over the baseline year 2023. Based on that we will set targets for our carbon reduction ambitions.
  3. We mainstream climate into all our concepts and mitigate or compensate the negative climate effects of our work.
