Working with Help a Child

Janita, visiting our projects in Rwanda to test and improve our monitoring tools on Youth & Work.

“I love how my job relates to different processes in the organization.”

“I have a passion for monitoring and evaluation. As I reached a point in my career that created a chance for a new job, I decided to mainly search for jobs in the Monitoring & Evaluation area. I came across the vacancy on OneWorld, a website with vacancies in the Non-Profit Sector. I had not heard of Help a Child before.  Right away, it felt like a one-on-one match, based on the Christian identity of the organization, the focus on communities, the geographical focus and the content of the work.

Help a Child is a really dedicated and caring organization. There is a lot of connectedness in working together as colleagues toward the same aim: taking care of children in need in the various project countries. My relationship with my colleagues is a strong one. It feels like being from the same family: we pray for each other and take care of each other.

“We always keep in mind that monitoring and evaluation
should serve the purpose of empowering communities.”

I love how my job relates to different processes in the organization: from fundraising to project planning and from monitoring to adjusting our programs. And overall: learning. There is a lot of freedom in how we can shape our monitoring and evaluation activities. Together with our partners, I decide what the priorities are. We always keep in mind that monitoring and evaluation should serve the purpose of empowering communities. We use different participatory tools to analyze data together with the communities. So it is the project participants who decide what the status is and what needs extra attention. The fact that Monitoring & Evaluation is not just a ‘tick-of-the-box’ exercise, says a lot about Help a Child. I love to work here.”
